PT-141 vs MT-2 (Melanotan 2): Key Differences
Bremelanotide vs Melanotan 2 Acetate
Nearly the same cyclic peptide, one small change at the end. Why PT-141 sits in Desire and MT-2 in Skin.

Almost the same molecule
PT-141 (bremelanotide) and MT-2 (Melanotan 2) are close relatives. Both are small cyclic peptides built on the same seven-amino-acid ring, and both come from the same family as alpha-MSH, the body's own melanocortin hormone. The structural difference is one tiny change at the end of the chain: MT-2 ends in an amide, PT-141 in a free acid. That's about one dalton of mass, small enough that labs check it carefully when they confirm identity.
We list PT-141 10mg in Desire and MT-2 10mg with the Skin listings.
Why they ended up in different places
That small change shifts which melanocortin receptors each one prefers. Research describes MT-2 as broad: it acts across several receptors, including MC1R, the one tied to skin pigment. That's why MT-2 is mostly talked about in tanning and pigmentation research.
PT-141 leans much more toward MC4R, a receptor in the brain studied around sexual desire, with far less pull on MC1R. It was developed out of the MT-2 work, and bremelanotide went on to be approved as a prescription drug for a specific condition in 2019. MT-2 has never been approved for anything.
That's the research background, listed as product information. It isn't a claim about what either vial does in a person.
Side by side
- MT-2: Melanotan 2 Acetate, broad melanocortin activity, pigmentation research angle, 10mg vial.
- PT-141: bremelanotide, MC4R-leaning, desire research angle, 10mg vial.
- MT-1, for context: Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a linear peptide, not cyclic, and sits next to MT-2 in Skin. See MT-1 vs MT-2.

Each compound has its own page: What is PT-141? and What is MT-2?. KPV comes from the same parent hormone but from the opposite end, and it doesn't act on these receptors at all. More on that in KPV vs BPC-157.
Quick answers
Are PT-141 and Melanotan 2 the same?
Nearly, but not quite. They share the same cyclic core. MT-2 ends in an amide and PT-141 in a free acid, and that small change shifts which melanocortin receptors each one prefers.
Why is MT-2 in Skin and PT-141 in Desire?
Research describes MT-2 as acting broadly, including on MC1R, the receptor tied to skin pigment. PT-141 leans toward MC4R, which is studied around desire. We group them by those research angles.
What sizes are they?
Both are 10mg lyophilized research vials.
