GLP-1 vs GLP-2 vs GLP-3: What the Names Mean
GLP-3 isn't a hormone. Why catalogs say GLP-2 and GLP-3, and which compounds those names point to.
Heads up: this is product info for lab and research use only. It isn't medical advice, and it doesn't diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Why the names get confusing
If you've searched “GLP-3” you've probably noticed nobody agrees on what it means. That's because it isn't a real hormone. It's shorthand that research catalogs, this one included, use for a compound that works on three receptors. “GLP-2” is messier still, because GLP-2 is also the name of an actual hormone that has nothing to do with tirzepatide.
What each name usually means
- GLP-1 is a real gut hormone, glucagon-like peptide-1. “A GLP-1” in conversation usually means a compound that acts on the GLP-1 receptor, like semaglutide.
- GLP-2, strictly, is a different real hormone (glucagon-like peptide-2) studied mostly around the gut lining. In peptide catalogs, though, “GLP-2” is often slang for a dual agonist: something that hits two receptors, GLP-1 and GIP. Tirzepatide is the usual example.
- GLP-3 isn't a hormone at all. It's catalog shorthand for a triple agonist, meaning GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon. Retatrutide is the compound people mean.
How we use them here
Our two Metabolic listings follow the catalog shorthand, so the number tells you how many receptors the compound is described as working on:
- Tirzepatide GLP-2 is tirzepatide (GLP-1 + GIP), 20mg.
- Reta GLP-3 is retatrutide (GLP-1 + GIP + glucagon), in 20mg, 30mg, and 50mg.
Neither listing contains the actual GLP-2 hormone. If you're researching that hormone specifically, it's a different compound and we don't carry it.
The comparisons people look for
Once the names make sense, the head-to-heads are easier to read: Reta GLP-3 vs Tirzepatide GLP-2, Retatrutide vs Semaglutide, and Tirzepatide vs Semaglutide. The compounds themselves are covered in What is retatrutide? and What is Tirzepatide GLP-2?.
Quick answers
Is GLP-3 a real hormone?
No. GLP-1 and GLP-2 are real hormones, but GLP-3 isn't. In research catalogs, GLP-3 is shorthand for a triple agonist like retatrutide, which acts on GLP-1, GIP, and glucagon receptors.
Does Tirzepatide GLP-2 contain GLP-2?
No. Here GLP-2 is shorthand for a dual agonist (GLP-1 plus GIP). The actual GLP-2 hormone is a different compound that we don't carry.
Which compound is Reta GLP-3?
Retatrutide. We list it in 20mg, 30mg, and 50mg vials on one card.
